Who are you?

“I am a Black woman, an artist, and a truth-teller who seeks deep connection, authenticity, and genuine love in the space I occupy—which is diverse, inclusive, creative, community-focused, and truly rooted in building equity for black folks.

I am a daughter, raised by two visionaries who never accepted the status quo. In 1980, my parents created the Malcolm Brown Gallery, the first for-profit Black-owned art gallery in the US. At the time, the story of Black American art was incomplete—and it still is. The gallery closed in 2011, but I re-launched it in 2022 to carry on their legacy.

If you know me—you know I go hard for my kids—all day every day.

Children are precious gifts from God. For all the families (no matter your definition of family) raising kids; you know that it’s joyful, but it is hard work and it’s a lifetime commitment of support—of their whole selves—that is our charge as parents while they navigate life—especially as parents of Black children. 

Have you always been you or did you grow into yourself?

I have always been me—yes. It took me some time to get really comfortable in my skin—but I am there and in love. To stand and stay in love with who you are…that’s the real flex. It takes time to get here but bayybee when it’s there it’s just…! I endeavor to support that sense of self discovery way earlier in the game—imagine what the world would look like if we all felt like that by 25?!

When was the last time you rebelled?

Yesterday. (Keep in mind this would more than likely my answer 365/24-7)

What are some things you do to celebrate you?

Honestly, I re-invest in my body; I treat myself to a personal trainer or a Pilates class. I also like to buy something special, just for me, that I wouldn’t normally buy.

How does Laudi Vidni help you tell your story as a unique, one-of-a-kind person?

Being able to make choices that represent you and only you is powerful. That’s how I felt when I walked into Laudi Vidni. Your accessories are the perfect add to accentuate and define your style. So you end up with a thing that defines you in the moment when you are creating—that is super cool.

How would you describe your personal style?

Classic, casual chic with a little stank on it at all times.

Tell us about your art.

“I’m an artist preoccupied with the representation and aura of the Black figure, especially the Black woman. From the very beginning of my journey, I have been absorbed by the way in which we, Black women, carry and construct the weight of the world: how we wear it, what we do with it, and what it becomes. I want the world to look beyond the surface and see our ethereal magic and hold our heaviness with care.”
