KELLEN

Who are you?
I am Kellen, a fitness professional who wants to create space for queer people and people of color to move, sweat and live their best lives.

Why did you design the bag you did? Why did you select the style? Leather?
Since I have a career in fitness, I am constantly running around and wearing multiple outfits per day. 9 times out of 10 I am carrying a backpack. Usually my backpacks are sporty, but I was looking for a bag that I can transition from fitness instructing into a casual evening look.

Have you always been you or did you grow into yourself?
I have always been myself. I am very much into goal-setting and once attributed that trait to a former career that I had. My mom quickly reminded me that I have always been a goal-setter, even as a child. She told me that I often would decide that when I wanted to do something, I did everything in my power to achieve my goal.

Was there a moment when you realized you were you?
Not that I can remember. I feel like I have always been pretty self-assured.

What's a fault you enjoy about yourself?
I often beat myself up about feeling the need to constantly be doing more.

When was the last time you rebelled?
I wish people understood that I am more sensitive that I let on to be and I am very much in touch with my more emotional side even if I do not always show it.

Is there a quote or motto that you live by?
A closed mouth doesn't get fed.

How does Laudi Vidni help you tell your story as a unique, one-of-a-kind person?
Being one of a kind means that I listen to and trust my gut. Time and time again, I have learned that my gut is my true voice and an instinct that is hardly ever wrong. When it does steer me in a direction that doesn't feel as smooth, I try to use that experience as a teachable moment by asking myself "what could I have done differently in this situation?" or "what is the silver lining in this experience?" And to be honest, sometimes the bumpy, steep road is where I have grown/learned the most and gained the most strength.

What event in life has shaped you most as a person, and how?
Coming out of the closet at age 16 definitely shaped me as a person. Being so young, but understanding that I did not fit into the societal norms surrounding sexual orientation taught me to be confident and unapologetic with myself. I was lucky to have a supportive community that gave me the space to discover myself and create the life that I wanted to live at a very young age. I am very grateful for that experience.

What are you trying to learn?
I am trying to learn to be more patient and understanding with the people in my life by listening more and stopping to think before reacting to certain situation. Just taking a moment to stop and think about their needs before rushing into an initial reaction.

How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style could best be described as athletic, comfortable and masculine with a feminine flare.
